NABERS to offer a $10,000 prize to help promote green buildings

Isn’t it good to see sustainability finally back on the table again and almost at pre-GFC levels? A key driver of this has been government, industry groups and media, like NABERS and The Fifth Estate.

Following the success of The Fifth Estate and NABERS Mad Men For The Planet workshop in late 2016, NABERS has decided to offer a cash prize of $10,000 of matched funding, to make the idea a reality.

Property HQ attended the original event, along with DEXUS, Investa, Stockland, Cundall, Energy Action, Envizi, CBRE, Magnetite, Eureka – Real Assets, DWP Suters, Property HQ, Equiem, IM Environmental Group and Nett Zero.

The idea? To make the NABERS rating as visible and sexy as a 5-star hotel rating, and bring sustainability back into the spotlight.

A key insight was the need to translate building metrics around energy performance into behavioural change, especially on the tenant’s behalf. Numbers and data are great for Facilities Managers and Building Supervisors, but they need to be broken down and be made real and understandable for tenants to act on it.

The deadline for the competition is 10 May. And the celebratory event is on 17 May in Sydney.
